1. The Carpets Life Cycle
Now, when it comes to buying a carpet you are not necessarily choosing a fast fashion item. Carpets are long lasting and tend to have a timeless feel. So, you won’t be wanting to change this every season. However, it is important before you buy to think of the life cycle of your carpet.
We are all very aware of the impact our products can have on the environment. So, it is important to think about where your carpet has come from and how long you plan to keep it. In a similar way we consume fashion items.
As we move further into a sustainable age recycling our waste is getting better and better, but we aren’t fully there yet. Carpets are complex items in the structure of their backing and the structure of their fibres which can make them difficult to re-cycle. However, there is research promoting man-made fibres that have been re-cycled from plastic bottles. So, this is one to watch for the future!
2. Natural Fibres
Many of the man-made fibres within the flooring industry come from plastic. So, a greener alternative can be to opt for fibres that are bio-degradable. Natural fibres can be a good option because they are a sustainable fibre that can bio-degrade.
3. Safer Dyes, Backing & Adhesive
It is a known fact that our man-made products can cause havoc to the natural world. Dyes from the textile industry can be toxic to the rivers they are poured into. So, it is vital to ensure that you know the carpet is using non-toxic materials to dye the fibres. The textiles industry is making slow progress, but better options are becoming available. A key point is to be aware and acknowledge what you are buying.
1. Re-cyclability
As previously stated, re-cycled carpets are not here right now. Developments are being made towards using re-cycled plastics in man-made fibres. However, the technology and investments have a long way to go until this is a viable option for consumers. But, like with other industries our environment is a key issue on the forefront of people’s minds. So, we as consumers can make the change by looking at how we consume our household products.
A green option for flooring may seem like it is in the distant future. But if we focus on the small things that we can control now. By ensuring that we get the most wear out of our floors, and when choosing a new one we know that it is sourced sustainably. We will endeavour to work towards a greener future.
